Next Network Meeting:
Thursday 7th November 2019 at Bexhill College 4-6pm
following the Navigating the Changing Educational Landscape training session (see below).

Agenda:

" Making waves in Hastings" A year-long residency in Hastings of the Britain's longest established chamber orchestra. Building on the success of the embedding of the London Mozart Players in the community of St John's in Upper Norwood, the orchestra has been funded by both local charities, Foyle Foundation and the Arts Council to draw in a new audience for Classical music through outreach, education and collaboration as well as bringing high profile artists to perform in Hastings.

“National Literacy Trust Hastings Hub – introducing a Punchdrunk  immersive teacher-led adventure   The aim of the project is to inspire and develop imaginative teaching practices for literacy, which place the teacher at the centre of the creativity and build an exciting adventure for young people in Years 1-4. Through this, the project aims to motivate and inspire young people to write creatively, and train teachers in new skills to facilitate this through an immersive narrative.”

The inaugural Hastings International Piano Festival presents engagement opportunities taking place this February/March in the Concerto Competition's first year off as it moves to being a biennial competition. These opportunities not only include free tickets to local young people to many of the festival events, but workshops with national orchestras, song-writing masterclasses with international singer songwriters, interactive kids concerts and much more.

UnderWired Productions are bringing their family musical, “The Lost Toys’ Big Christmas Adventure!” to The Sussex Studio at The White Rock Theatre in Hastings. "As a charity, one of our objectives is to support affordable, comprehensive access to theatre, particularly in communities where there's  limited opportunity. With severe cuts to arts funding in schools, we want to talk to teachers about the show we’ve created and to better understand the challenges they’re facing."

Boys Don't

What’s a boy to do? From the playground to the classroom, from home to the uncharted waters of online, boys learn that displaying their feelings is a no-no. But what happens to emotion that can’t be let out?

Through funny, familiar and sometimes heartbreaking stories drawn from the real-life experiences of its cast of poets and spoken word performers, Boys Don’t delivers insights into male experiences of growing up, and offers the possibility of more open communication for us all.

Battle Festival will invite schools to work with them according to the needs of each individual project. Schools need to be able to demonstrate the following criteria:
  • Head teachers actively engage with and proactively support our projects on behalf of their pupils and staff.
  • Schools are located in Battle or are within a 5/6 mile radius of the town centre.
  • Schools are willing to partially fund projects or provide support in kind.

Hastings and Rother Music Month February 14th - March 17th
Picture
•Arises from aspiration for Hastings and Rother to be recognised as a “Music City”
•This recognises the current wealth of musical talent and events in the area
•Provides the context for building on these strengths for the sector to develop professionally

A Music City, by its simplest definition, is a place with a vibrant music economy. There is growing recognition among governments and other stakeholders that Music Cities can deliver significant economic,  cultural, educational and social benefits.

The essential elements of Music Cities are:
  • Artists and musicians;
  • A thriving music scene;
  • Access to spaces and places;
  • A receptive and engaged audience; and
  • Record labels and other music-related businesses

Residents of Hastings have been judged to have the highest level of musical sophistication by researchers from Goldsmiths, University of London and BBC Lab UK in their highly regarded PLOS ONE journal.

We think Hastings and Rother can justifiably lay claim to the title.

The first initiative is going to be branding 14 February – 17 March 2017 as Music Month encompassing some of the area’s best music events including Fat Tuesday and the Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition.
  • All venues or organisations are invited to include music events already in their calendar, or to programme events during the period, under the banner of Music Month.
  • There will be a marketing campaign delivered by Visit 1066 Country Marketing targeting regional and London audiences. www.visit1066country.com/musicmonth
  • Consultation sessions in Hastings and Rother will take place about how to take things forward, including membership of a Music City Advisory Board
Interested in getting involved? Contact Melanie melanie.powell@rother.gov.uk or Michael mhambridge@hastingsbc.gov.uk
