Free Event - Taking (bank) notes: Pay Parity in the Cultural Sector
How can we emerge as a stronger cultural community from the pandemic? How can we ensure creative freelancers recover with greater financial security and organisations support that recovery? Organisations often offer day rates for creative freelance work, but do we have a shared understanding of what these day rates need to cover for creative freelancers in order that they can have a sustainable career? In this interactive session The Uncultured (Ashleigh Bowmott + Laura Sweeney) will share provocations and useful information on how we could shift the balance of pay disparity between arts and cultural sector freelance day rates and salaries. The first hour of the session will be open to both organisations and freelancers, the second part of the session will be exclusively for freelancers. The event will be BSL interpreted and zoom transcription will be in place. If you are a freelancer on a low income please enquire about our £50 bursaries. Only a few places left, please book here

Introducing - Amplify Profiling children and young people's voice in creative & cultural learning15/5/2021 A youth voice initiative by Arts Council England's Bridge Network. The Bridge network has come together to collaboratively launch a new digital series focusing on good practice in children and young people voice across England. 14th May will see the launch of a new online digital magazine series that highlights elements of best practice around fostering ‘children and young people’s voice (CYP Voice), in the context of creative and cultural learning. Launched collectively by the National Bridge Network and aimed at professionals working in the cultural, education and youth sectors, the series will showcase examples of adult-led CYP informed work as well as CYP initiated work. The Bridge network's collective goal is to demonstrate the range of conditions that enable young people to develop their voice in different contexts e.g. cultural sector, youth sector, education sector and community. The episodes will reflect on the impact of Covid19 and how it has affected young people and how they have adapted to using different platforms to get their voices heard. The initiative aims to encourage greater interest in and uptake of leading practice around encouraging CYP voice and young people’s leadership in a range of settings. Each episode will be published biweekly, initially for 3 months, and will follow themes covering, Wellbeing, Young Creatives, Child lead learning, Board participation, Changemakers and Ambassadors. The concept of this resource is to enable viewers who are well-practised in this work, and those who are just starting out to equally find meaningful and useful information related to questions such as: How is this ‘youth voice' work managed, What impact does ‘youth voice 'activity have both on your organisation and the young people who are participating? and How do you fund your youth voice 'activity." The first episode, focusing on wellbeing, is available to view below Visit the Website here Join us for extraordinary opera and so much more We are delighted to be able to once again invite schools into our auditorium to watch a full opera as part of our Performances for Schools programme this autumn, which has already inspired over 30,000 students. Young people from across East Sussex, aged 12-20, have been involved in developing a brand-new website for Discovery College. The college is a partnership of different organisations, headed by Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, that create and deliver co-produced courses that any young person in East Sussex can join, to look after their mental health, enjoy themselves, be with other young people, and build their skills. Co-design is the guiding principle for Discovery College, a sister programme to Recovery College. Young people with lived experience of mental health challenges play a key role in designing the programme of arts and psycho-educational courses to support young people’s mental health. Discovery College has been running for a number of years. A new partnership with Lewes-based arts charity Culture Shift and support from Arts Council England is enabling Discovery College to expand and grow. “Young people have consistently told us that they want to show their communities and the world that experiencing mental health challenges is not a barrier to having strengths, talent, hopes and aspirations. Through the website they can now share this and more with us and, like everyone else involved with the project, I am delighted with the result.” “Designing Together was the name of the course we delivered to a really switched on group of young people, reflected Ross Andrews Clifford and Chloe Taylor, web designer and developer. `Everyone ought to be proud of what they achieved; a dynamic and interactive resource and information website for Discovery College’s courses, which will bring awareness to its uniquely supportive role within the mental health arena for vulnerable young people.” The website helps shine a light on a support programme for young people and the evolving programme of arts and psycho-education courses. First is a chance to meet other parents in a Covid safe environment, a calm and welcoming space for some much needed connection, storytelling and friendship. The programme features six workshops from visiting artists from a range of art forms, alongside regular baby sensory and creative activities.
The sessions are £8 and last for an hour and a half with refreshments provided. Limited free places available for single parents, parents aged under 25 and those in receipt of Universal Credit. We know that this October half term will be even harder than usual to keep the whole family occupied - especially with the weather looking a little dreary. With this in mind, we have worked with Towner International artist Rita Evans on a series of free hands-on creative workshops for the whole family which can be enjoyed in a Covid-secure environment. We’ve also got family film screenings and a great kid's menu in our cafe. Towner Cinema Family Film: Away Wednesday 28 October, 11.00am & 3.00pm Friday 30 October, 11.00am & 3.00pm After a mysterious crash landing, a young boy wakes up alone on an exotic island. He’s being chased by a dark spirit, although it’s unclear whether the spirit means to help or harm the boy. Suitable for all ages, the story, told without dialogue over a series of breath-taking backgrounds, is equally inspired by reality, dreams, and waking fantasies. An utterly charming and beautifully animated feature film. Tickets to these special family screenings are only £5. https://www.townereastbourne.org.uk/events/film/ DepicT! is an international short film competition which seeks to unearth up-and-coming film-making talent in the UK. FREE Join us for gallery tours of Zadie Xa: Child of Magohalmi and the Echoes of Creation and Marc Baurer: Mal Etre/Performance followed by an introduction to Iniva’s Emotional Learning Cards which bring together contemporary artwork with therapeutic commentary and questions. Iniva’s Emotional Learning Cards occupy a leading position in the growing fields of emotional learning and psychological therapies. The resources encourage emotional literacy, support and critique ‘meaning-making’ as well as challenging often stereotypical ideas about who makes art and what its purpose might be. Using art as a starting point, the cards help facilitators and educators open up difficult conversations on challenging feelings, and complex family or cultural experiences. By openly exploring less talked about feelings and thoughts engendered by the artworks, we re-frame them as common to the human family, to be shared and thought about rather than labelled as embarrassing or shameful and denied or hidden away.
