Dear Teacher,
Last year we had the pleasure to involve local youth in our festival's big parade for St. Leonards' Festival. This year we are also launching another creative initiative in which we would like to involve your school. 'The Inventor's Handbook' is a participatory visual arts project, in which we hope to involve a large number of children from local schools and children centres. Participants that sign up to the project will be sent a branded and personalised sketch book to fill in with their creative interpretation of remarkable inventions, re-inventions and/or discoveries they might have come across, or would like to know more about. Contributions are not limited to visual art forms – they can also include video, sound recordings as well as images, drawings and photos. The sketchbooks will be displayed in a gallery space in St.Leonards for 30 days around the festival dates, and we will reward the best work. The festival will run on 1st July this year, with an opening night on 30th June. We believe this activity will be not only an incentive to young people's interest in science, but also to their self esteem and their creativity, as the best work would be displayed publicly. The project ties in with the school curriculum in many ways, and presents a good opportunity to display your students' work in a non-profit professional environment, and would enhance your school's contribution to extra curricular activities. We would really like to have your school on board, and would be very grateful if you could let us know either way if you are interested in the activity. Please reply to me on [email protected] Kind Regards, James Hodgson, St. Leonards Festival Director 111 Collectiff [email protected]

For those who missed the HRAEN Network meeting last Tuesday, please find below items about relevant event in Hastings and Rother Music Month. That will be of specific interest to your music teachers and those at primary level who are deal with music, so please forward these to whoever may be interested. It would be excellent if teachers and even secondary school students were able to contribute to the general consultation sessions. Also, we would encourage those schools who have performance spaces and rehearsal spaces that are in any way open to the public for use to take part in the Venues Review. Music Month kicks off next week with over 150 events to choose from – see www.visit1066.com/musicmonth for full listings.
There are three events that we’d like to highlight. We will be formally launching the idea of ‘Hastings & Rother Music City’ as part of the UnConvention on Monday 27 February at The Palace, 37 White Rock, Hastings, TN34 1JL. There will be a session on Music Cities and Music Tourism in the morning followed by the launch at 1pm. All welcome. The UnConvention is a free event and you can see the full programme at www.hastingsfattuesday.co.uk. There will be two general consultation sessions for anyone involved in the music sector and music economy. These will be a chance to have an open discussion of key issues we want to take forward to develop the music scene in Hastings and Rother, plus find out who wants to be on the Music Advisory Board for the future. De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill, Thursday 9 March, 5-7pm The Palace, Hastings, Monday 13 March, 5-7pm Please RSVP for all three events to [email protected]. There is also a Venues Review going on for Hastings & Bexhill which we hope all venues and musicians will contribute to. See the full story on The Stinger website. There is an online survey to complete which you can find at https://goo.gl/forms/u091z4kLtCOrHAJ33. Deadline 17 February. We hope to see you at one of the events. These updates are provided by the HRAEN steering group and comprise information we feel will be most useful to the HRAEN members.
